From Toronto, Ontario

SAMANTHA MARTIN

Samantha Martin belts out Delta Blues, Soul, Funk and R&B with a voice that literally shakes the foundations with its strength and passion. Backed by her terrific band Delta Sugar she has been a force on the Canadian Blues scene since her debut album “Send The Nightingale” came out in 2015 earning her 4 Maple Blues Award nominations. Her next two – “Run To Me” (2019) and “The Reckless One” (2022) both earned her Juno Award nominations and she’s had a staggering number of Maple Blues Award nominations (20 to be exact) over the past 6 years in the categories of Best Female Artist, Best Entertainer, Electric Act, Recording and Songwriter of the Year. To say this woman is a talent is an understatement. Samantha comes to us fresh off another successful European tour and a summer of performing at major Blues Festivals across Canada to large enthusiastic audiences. This is the fourth time she has played Blues On The Rideau at The Cove and every one of her shows has been remarkable. How fortunate we are to be able to see her so up close and personal in the intimate setting of The Cove.

“upbeat, raunchy, sneering and sassy, rocking rhythm ‘n blues”

November 18

From Niagara, Ontario

SPENCER MACKENZIE

The last time Spencer played BOTR in 2016 he was a young Blues prodigy. Now at age 23 he’s matured into an amazing guitarist, singer, songwriter and showman backed by a great band of young, talented musicians. It’s hard to believe that a young white man from southern Ontario can play the Blues with such skill, passion and feeling. He’s already earned a whack of awards including three Independent Blues Awards Nominations (Best Blues Rock CD, Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Blues Song), the 2017 Niagara Music Award for best Blues Artist of the Year, the Maple Blues Award for Best New Artist in 2016 (he also won the Toronto Blues Society Talent Search that same year) and he came in 3rd at the International Songwriting Competition in 2016. Many more to come I’m sure. Don’t miss this chance to see this terrific young rising star before he becomes too famous to play these smaller venues. If you’re not familiar with him check out his YouTubes and you’ll see why you’ll want to be at this show!

“Spencer blends the best of blues and the best of soul for a hypnotic effect”

December 2

From Ottawa, Ontario

ANGELIQUE FRANCIS

Another fabulous gifted young artist who plays Blues, Soul and classic R&B with skill and feeling well beyond her years. Angelique first took the stage at age 7 and has been amazing audiences ever since with her powerful, soulful vocals, showmanship and prowess on a variety of instruments (upright & electric bass, electric & acoustic guitar and harmonica). Her voice reminds you of Blues legends like Big Mama Thornton, Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor and Bessie Smith. Her reputation and fame are rising rapidly - she’s already shared the stage with famous artists like Joe Bonamassa, Keb’ Mo’, Gary Clark Jr. and Burton Cummings and last winter she was invited to play on the prestigious Keeping The Blues Alive Sea Cruise. She comes to us after a summer of playing some of the biggest and best Blues Festivals in Canada. Her band is a family affair - talented younger sisters Kharincia and Kira on horns, violin and backing vocals, dad Kiran is on drums. If you’ve never seen Angelique perform before be prepared to be blown away!

“… there’s no denying powerhouse blues singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Angelique Francis has ‘it,’ and she’s letting it flow for the immense pleasure of listeners everywhere…”

January 20 & 21 – 2 Night Stand

From Toronto, Ontario

JACK DE KEYZER

A 2X Juno Award, 7X Maple Blues Award winner with 45+ years of experience playing Blues, Rock, Soul, R&B and Jazz Jack is an incredible guitarist and singer/songwriter with a veteran, polished 4 piece band behind him - bass, drums, sax and keyboards. He truly is one of the best, longest running and hardest working Bluesmen in Canada. No wonder they call him the “King Of The Blues’ and no wonder he’s an annual favourite at BOTR. This will be his 11th performance over the 17 years that BOTR has been running – the most of any artist. Bring you dancing shoes - the floor is always packed when Jack is on stage. Because of his popularity Jack will be doing a 2 Night Stand and he always sells out so book early if you want to be here!

February 17 (One show only)

From Melbourne, Australia & Wainfleet, Ontario

LLOYD SPIEGEL & SUZIE VINNICK

How fortunate we are to have this talented pair of Blues/Roots artists coming to BOTR this season while they are on tour together. Born in Melbourne, Australia Lloyd started performing at age 10. Since then he’s developed into a brilliant singer/songwriter/guitarist and consummate performer who performs all over the world. He’s a perennial winner at the Australian Blues Awards witih a stunning 34 wins since 2004 in the categories of Best Artist, Song, Band, Album and Producer.

Suzie is one of Canada’s best know Blues/Roots artists and she’s no stranger to BOTR having performed here multiple times with Rick Fines. Her voice has been described as a mix of “spun gold and honey” and she’s a tremendously gifted guitarist and bassist. Suzie has won 10 Maple Blues Awards, been nominated 3X for a Juno and received the Great Canadian Blues Award from CBC radio’s Saturday Night Blues.

This show will be a little different from the regular BOTR format. Lloyd & Suzie will each do a solo set and then Cove Manager/bass player extraordinaire Seamus Cowan along with drummer Rob Radford will join them for a dancin’ Blues set,

March 24

From Nanaimo, BC

DAVID GOGO

It’s about time David finally made it here. We had to postpone his show three times over the past 3 years due to COVID. If you love dynamite electric Blues Rock (although he plays acoustic guitar just as well) then this is one show you don’t want to miss. His combination of rugged vocals and virtuosic guitar along with his entertaining style of showmanship will grab you with the first song and hold you for the entire show. David has recorded 16 albums over his long career and been nominated 6X for a Juno, won the Maple Blues Award for Guitarist of the Year 3X (and just won another MBA last year along with Steve Marriner for Best Acoustic Artist). He’s also won several Western Canadian Music Awards and a Great Canadian Blues Award from CBC radio’s Saturday Night Blues.

“good time, old-school, feel-good Blues, Rock, Soul or any combination of the three accentuated by great guitar playing”.

April 14

From Hamilton, Ontario

HARRISON KENNEDY

At age 80 Harrison truly is a member of Canada’s Blues royalty. He does it all with his amazing voice - Roots, Blues, Soul and R&B. Born and raised in “The Hammer” Harrison started his career with a bang in the early ‘70’s when he joined the famous Motown band Chairmen Of The Board. He travelled the world with them performing on shows like Soul Train, American Bandstand and England’s Top Of The Pops. When COTB ended Harrison returned to Hamilton where he basically dropped out of the music business for 30 years before re-emerging in 2003 with a great album called “Sweet Taste”. Since then he’s released 8 more (7 of them on Canada’s terrific Blues label Electro-Fi) culminating in his newest one “Thanks For Tomorrow” which critics are calling his best ever. I agree. This man just keeps getting better! Harrison has won a Juno and been nominated for 5 more, he’s been nominated several times for an American Blues Music Award and an incredible number of times for Maple Blues Awards. He recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the City of Hamilton for his wonderful body of work. He brings a fabulous band with him to this gig including the great Jesse O’Brien on keyboards. This is a “not to be missed” show.

“soul-drenched vocals…thinking of today’s living Blues singers Kennedy has to be among the Top five”
Glide Magazine, USA

DAVID ROTUNDO BAND

If you’ve been around the Canadian Blues scene for the past 30 years harmonica ace, singer/songwriter & guitarist David Rotundo needs no introduction. Originally from Toronto he became obsessed with the Blues after seeing James Cotton play in 1991. He took up the harmonica and traveled to Chicago, Memphis, Clarksdale, New Orleans and Austin learning how to play from the masters before returning to T.O. where he performed with several different groups, including a stint with Jack De Keyser, before starting his own band in 2001. David now plays all over the world wintering in Mexico and touring in eastern Europe in the summers where he has a huge following. And no wonder – he delivers one of the most entertaining, high energy shows you will see anywhere. His most recent album (his 5th) called “So Much Trouble” was produced by the legendary Lee Oskar and has garnered international accolades and air play. Over the years David has been one of the most popular performers at BOTR - this will be his 9th visit. He’ll have his full band with him for the two Dinner & Shows and will also be doing an ACOUSTIC LUNCH on Saturday from noon to 2 pm with Cove Manager and bass player SEAMUS COWAN. David’s shows have always Sold Out so reserve early if you want to be there!

“David Rotundo plays the Blues the way it's supposed to be played”

From Toronto, Ontario

BLACKBURN BROTHERS

Blackburn consists of brothers Brooke on guitar & vocals, Duane on keyboards & lead vocals, Cory on drums and friends Andrew Stewart on bass and Neil Braithwaite on sax. (4th brother Robert also collaborates on writing their songs). They come by their unique blend of Blues, Soul, Funk and R&B honestly. Their ancestors came to Canada via the Underground Railroad in the 1800’s bringing their rich heritage of African American music with them. And their father – Bobby Dean Blackburn – was a mainstay keyboardist on the vibrant Toronto R&B scene for decades. Blackburn received the Maple Blues Award for Best New Band when they hit the scene in 2010 and they’ve since been nominated for a Juno and multiple Maple Blues Awards. They have two great albums out and good news – another one on the way (on Electro-Fi) to be released in the Spring of 2023 – just in time for their appearance here. It’s their second visit to BOTR at The Cove and if this one is anything like the last it will be a night to remember!

“A rich, beefy stew of blues slammed into elements of R&B and funk… lifts a proud family name to the next level. Their live show is a born-again testament to the deep-rooted talents of this genetic powerhouse”.
